Conventional overcurrent protection schemes for radial distribution systems typically coordinate a recloser at the beginning of the feeder with lateral fuses. Integrating Distributed Generation (DG) into distribution systems introduces complex challenges in protective coordination that conventional methods struggle to address effectively. In this paper, we propose a new protection scheme that replaces reclosers along the line with conventional directional overcurrent relays. The proposed strategy ensures protection selectivity, whether or not DG units are connected to the network. The scheme supports both fuse-saving and fuse-blowing approaches, providing flexibility depending on operational needs. The protection system's performance is designed to ensure effective operation during network-connected or islanded modes. This flexibility makes it suitable for modern distribution systems with a high penetration of distributed energy resources. Additionally, the scheme can enhance reliability and reduce unnecessary disconnections, thus maintaining network stability. To evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed scheme, detailed assessments were conducted on a representative distribution system. Simulations were performed using Digsilent software, demonstrating the practicality and benefits of the new approach for improving system reliability and maintaining protective coordination in diverse scenarios.
